AHRI Signs Standards Agreement with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates
Arlington, Va. (March 15, 2010) -- On a recent trip to the middle east, Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) President and CEO Stephen Yurek signed cooperative agreements with the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Association (SASO) and the UAE's Emirates Standardization and Metrology Authority, ESMA, aimed at further harmonizing HVACR and water heating testing and rating standards globally. The agreement calls for SASO and ESMA to adopt AHRI's standards as Saudi, and UAE national standards, respectively, in some cases with regional adaptations.
In recent months, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have begun to place a new emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental protection. With personal visits in November 2009 and February 2010, AHRI has signaled in a very serious way its intent to work closely with the governments of those nations to use AHRI standards and performance certification programs to help them meet with efficiency and environmental goals and to further global harmonization of standards and certification programs.
"This agreement is an important first step in what we hope and expect will be on ongoing, very productive relationship," Yurek said. Our active involvement in this region not only helps us expand our global reach, but also helps our member companies that do business in the region compete on a level playing field with other manufacturers," he said.
Discussions are underway between AHRI, SASO and ESMA about holding a series of workshops is that could lead to an agreement on adoption of certification in the near future. The Emirates Standardization and Metrology Authority (ESMA) has invited AHRI and other private parties, including AHRI member companies to apply to participate in ESMA standards development and conformity assessment committees that ultimately will develop Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for the UAE.

The system features a 1.1 megawatt rooftop single-crystalline PV system, providing enough energy to power between 80 and 100 homes annually. The solar upgrades have resulted in significant reduction of energy costs and carbon emissions through renewable technology.
? The State of Maryland ? As part of Maryland Governor Martin O?Malley?s energy initiative, EmPOWER Maryland, Johnson Controls supported the retrofit of more than 118 government facilities throughout the state. The revamp is expected to save the state more than $29 million in energy costs through 2017. Johnson Controls also upgraded 40 Maryland State Police facilities, saving an anticipated $15.9 million in utility and operational costs over 14 years.

ASHRAE Research: Laboratory Test of Five Non-Chemical Devices Used in Cooling Towers Showed No Effectiveness in Preventing Biological Growth
April 7, 2010 - ATLANTA ?New research supported by ASHRAE indicates that non-chemical devices (NCD) marketed to control the growth of biological agents, such as Legionella in cooling towers, may not materially reduce biological growth.
Research project No. 1361, Biological Control in Cooling Towers Using Non-Chemical Water Treatment Devices, a two-year project recently completed by Dr. Radisav Vidic at the University of Pittsburgh, evaluated five non-chemical devices using different technologies to control biological activity in a model cooling-tower system. The devices studied included a hydrodynamic cavitation device, pulsed and static electric field devices, an ultra-sonic device and a magnetic device.
In Dr. Vidic?s research, none of the non-chemical devices measurably reduced planktonic or sessile microbial populations in comparison to no-treatment tests and to a conventional chemical microbial control treatment protocol. The findings appear to be inconsistent with previous research by non-chemical device manufacturers and some independent researchers on some of the same devices tested in the ASHRAE study. Those other studies reported measurable degrees of biological control within the parameters of testing conducted.
?These results suggest that equipment operators, building owners and engineers should consider taking more frequent water sample tests for their systems that rely on NCDs for biological control. If the testing shows an issue, one possible measure is to add chemical treatment capability to their system to prevent a potential health hazard from developing until additional research and field testing can resolve this question,? according to Dr. Vidic .
The study results are still subject to final approval by the sponsoring technical committee, TC 3.6 ? Water Treatment.
