U.S. Natural Gas Reserves Increase Again in 2009

Washington, D.C. ? The American Gas Association (AGA) today reported that at year-end 2009 the ?known reserves? of natural gas in the United States likely increased for the eleventh straight year and now approach 250 trillion cubic feet ? the highest level in more than 35 years. Much of the supply optimism can be traced to the influences of unconventional resources such as natural gas from shale and tight sands.

?Natural gas supply in this county remains bullish,? said David N. Parker, AGA president and CEO. ?Production is also up, underpinned by the recent development of secure, domestic natural gas resources in deepwater offshore, as well as unconventional gas in the lower 48 states. This is great news for natural gas customers. AGA believes these numbers will hold steady for the foreseeable future unless significant policy decisions restrict access to potential resources of domestic natural gas.?

BP, the largest U.S. producer of natural gas in 2009, produced less than five percent of the national total last year, indicating that the natural gas production industry remains very competitive. Other large producers and reserves holders include household names such as ExxonMobil, yet significant volumes of gas are produced by others, such as Chesapeake Energy, Devon, Anadarko and EOG Resources. In fact, thousands of other large, mid-size and small producers provided the bulk of domestic natural gas to local distribution companies last year.

?The natural gas industry is the lifeblood of many American communities, contributing millions of jobs to the economy and billions in revenue to the U.S. Treasury,? said Parker. ?Our findings reinforce that this clean, efficient fuel is available in our country right now ? making it an essential component for any national energy policy.?

There are more than 70 million residential, commercial and industrial natural gas customers in the U.S., of which 91 percent ? more than 64 million customers ? receive their gas from AGA members. Today, natural gas meets almost one-fourth of the United States' energy needs.

ASHRAE Annual Conference to Focus on High Efficiency, Energy Conservation and Facts vs. Simulation

April 7, 2010 - ATLANTA?Guidance on how to improve building systems?from moisture issues to ventilation?including high efficiency HVAC&R systems and ventilation systems, is an important focus of the technical program at ASHRAE?s 2010 Annual Conference, June 26-30 in Albuquerque, N.M.

?The program is strong in presentations that are market-based, addressing existing technology, systems and equipment, giving attendees more practical, hands-on knowledge that they can use daily in their professions,? Kirk Mescher, conference program chair, said. ?The conference presents more paper-related sessions, a result of integrating a shorter, conference paper into the program.?

The technical program starts Sunday, June 27, at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The program features 10 technical paper sessions (with 29 papers presented), 16 conference paper sessions (40 papers presented), 61 seminars, 10 forums and one technical plenary session for a total of 98 sessions and 69 meeting papers. For a complete listing of the technical program, visit www.ashrae.org/newmexico.

The program is divided into seven tracks. The tracks with the most number of programs are: High Efficiency HVAC&R Systems, Energy Facts vs. Simulation, Living with HVAC&R Systems, Energy Conservation vs. New Generation and Ventilation Systems.

Sessions of interest in these tracks include: Standard 90.1-2010, A First Look, a two-part seminar that presents information on the development and content of the upcoming 2010 version of 90.1; Energy Efficient Operation and Design of Data Centers, addressing efficiency improvement options in data centers and the resultant operating cost associated with these improvements; Energy Efficiency Retrofit Measures for Government Buildings, focused on energy efficient retrofits of existing buildings; HVAC System Noise Control for Classrooms, summarizing guidelines/requirements related to noise control in schools; and Building Energy Simulation 101, covering the basics of simulation programs and selecting the appropriate type.

Conference registrants will also be able to experience the technical program through the Virtual Conference, providing the most complete access to the state-of-the-art concepts and latest design techniques. Participants of the Virtual Conference can view and listen to programs on their own schedule, post comments and view presenters? responses. Access to the Virtual Conference is included with paid conference registration or can be purchased separately.

Advance conference registration is $515 (ASHRAE member) and $680 (non-member) by May 31. Virtual Conference registration is $299 (ASHRAE member) and $464 (non-member). To register or for more information, go to www.ashrae.org/newmexico.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of some 50,000 persons. ASHRAE fulfills its mission of advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education.

AGA Encourages Increased Safety Awareness During National Safe Digging Month

Washington, DC ? The American Gas Association (AGA), the national trade association for 195 natural gas utility companies, today called for an increased awareness of safe outdoor digging practices in honor of National Safe Digging Month. AGA and partner organizations will use the month of April to raise awareness of the ?811 Call Before You Dig? program.

With the onset of warmer weather, the busy digging season begins. AGA urges contractors and homeowners to call 811 before they dig, with the aim of preventing injuries, property damage and outages. The 811 hotline is a free service to that will notify affected utilities of a person?s intent to dig. Within a few days, the utility companies will then mark the approximate locations of the utility-owned lines with paint or flags. Natural gas pipelines, electric power lines and other underground facilities can sometimes be buried only a few inches, making them easy to strike even during shallow digging projects.

?We can?t stress this enough: safety is absolutely the number one priority of AGA members,? said David N. Parker, AGA president and CEO. ?The majority of safety incidents along natural gas utility lines are preventable. Many of these reportable accidents are caused by outside forces or third-party damage. That is why we?re encouraging Americans to call 811 before beginning any outdoor digging project, large or small.?

Since the 811 ?Call Before You Dig? campaign was created in 2004, there has been roughly a 40 percent reduction in excavation damages. For more information, visit www.call811.com.

?Our nation?s natural gas delivery system is safe and well-designed,? said Parker. ?That being said, we urge citizens to make a quick, easy call to 811 to cover their bases before digging?so that utilities can continue to transport energy to America?s 70 million natural gas users safely and reliably.?
